Honda's smooth and durable 1,099cc flat-four engine; Showing 95,161 miles; with
the vendor for 25 years; an intriguing opportunity for an enthusiast looking for
a rewarding project with plenty of character
Few motorcycles are
guaranteed to attract quite as much attention as a trike, and this unusual Honda
GL1000-based example offers an intriguing opportunity for an enthusiast looking
for a rewarding project with plenty of character.
First registered in
February 1983, this Honda GL1000 is powered by Honda's smooth and durable
1,099cc flat-four engine and has been in the current ownership since 2001.
Originally purchased as a motorcycle, it was subsequently converted into the
trike configuration seen today. The vendor advises that the conversion was
carried out in such a way that the rear assembly is bolted on, with the original
motorcycle frame remaining unmodified, a feature that may appeal to prospective
purchasers.
Showing 95,161 miles on the speedometer, the machine is based
upon one of Honda's most respected touring motorcycles. The Gold Wing's refined
engine, impressive reliability and relaxed cruising ability helped establish it
as a benchmark for long-distance motorcycling, qualities that continue to make
these machines popular with enthusiasts today.
The vendor reports that
the engine will run when the starter solenoid is bridged directly, suggesting
that the mechanicals remain fundamentally sound. However, there appear to be
some electrical issues requiring attention before the machine can be returned to
regular use, and prospective purchasers should therefore view it as a project
requiring further investigation and recommissioning.
Despite this, the
trike presents an interesting proposition, offering plenty of scope for the next
owner to put their own stamp on it. Whether the intention is to complete the
recommissioning and enjoy it as a distinctive road-going trike, or simply
preserve an unusual conversion built around one of Honda's most respected
powerplants, it offers plenty of potential.
An
unusual and characterful machine with long-term ownership, this Honda represents
an affordable entry into trike ownership and a rewarding project for someone
with the time, enthusiasm and know-how to return it to the
road.
