Right hand drive ;
original Birmingham registration NOV 504; same family since April 1962;
comprehensive body-off restoration undertaken and completed in 1974; requires
completion of current restoration and a mechanical recommissioning but with all
the hard work already done
This charming 1953 MG TD has
remained in the same family since April 1962, when it was purchased by the
current owner as his first car for £340. Between 1966 and 1969 it was used by
the owner's brother before being returned, after which a comprehensive body-off
restoration was undertaken and completed in 1974.
The car retains its
original engine block and crankcase, rebuilt during restoration with re-lined
cylinder bores. Performance upgrades include an MG Stage 2 cylinder head, larger
SU carburettors and a stainless steel P.D. Gough exhaust system with copper
tailpipe.
Importantly, the original cylinder head, carburettors and air
cleaner are included, together with a spare engine, gearbox components, spare SU
fuel pumps, water pumps, a Morris rear axle, additional wheels and various other
parts accumulated during over 60 years of ownership.
Mechanically, the
MG remains largely to original specification, including the standard gearbox,
steering, suspension and Lockheed braking system.
The electrical system
is predominantly original, featuring the correct MG dynamo with tachometer
drive. The body restoration included work to the wings, doors, rear wheel arches
and completely rebuilt running boards.
The chassis was restored off the
car, checked for dimensional accuracy, grit blasted, plasma-sprayed with
aluminium and refinished in black enamel.
This MG TD has been much more
than a classic car. It has toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe,
including holidays to John O'Groats and Germany's Black Forest, completed a lap
of the Nürburgring, and even served as the owners' honeymoon car in
1976.
The car now requires
completion of its current restoration. We have been advised that all parts
necessary to finish this delightful MG are included in the sale, together with a
substantial collection of spare parts accumulated over decades of
ownership.
The vendor also possesses extensive knowledge of the car and
would be pleased to share this with the next custodian. Although the car is not
currently running, the engine turns freely by hand.
Given that it has
been off the road for some time, we recommend a full recommissioning of the
engine, braking system and all mechanical components before returning the car to
active use.
A rare opportunity to acquire
a highly original MG TD with exceptional provenance, extensive history and
continuous family ownership spanning more than six decades. Cars with such
authentic history and long-term custodianship seldom become
available.
