This superb DB MkIII came into the
vendor’s hands way back in early 1970. Purchased when a young student, it was
all he could do to keep it vaguely mobile, a series of worn out Minis keeping
him at college while he worked on the Aston as best he could
afford.
That he managed to hang on to it is
testament to both his enthusiasm for the car and the glorious nature of the
beast, with which he formed a love-affair that has endured for over 50
years.
All invoices for work and parts over the
last 50 years are present, with much correspondence from Ivan Forshaw at Aston
Service and Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd at Newport Pagnell.
Too numerous to mention individually, they paint a picture of a car
well cared for throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s.
A
move to Portugal produced the time and space to restore the car and in 2009 he
took the plunge to do the job properly - and what a superb job he has made of
it. A memory stick of photos show the car fully stripped and the invoices carry
on to the present date listing the attention it has
received.
Comprehensively stripped, the chassis
and bodywork were carefully prepared and repaired as required. New sills were
made along with careful and professional repairs to the lower front wing
sections. Bidders are advised that there is a small coin size dink in the rear
wing behind the driver's door.
Once
professionally repainted, the rebuild commenced in 2010, with new kingpins and
bushes to the suspension. New rear hubs were added from Tim Stamper along with
new front hubs to an improved design.
The
engine was fully rebuilt with a reground crank, new pistons, liners and bearings
and a new clutch cover and driven plate were added. Valves, cam followers; guides and seals
were replaced along with many small parts – mostly supplied by Aston Service in
Dorset. The head had been the source of overheating problems for a while and so
the block was lightly skimmed and the head machined to take Wills Rings in lieu
of a headgasket.
Much attention was taken with
the panel and window seals, which have been carefully fitted and look
superb.
The interior received the same level of
attention, including new carpets from Coverdale to the original patterns in
Kensington Sage. The headlining was replaced in Grey Wool and the front seats
were retrimmed in the correct VM3393 Luxan Grey which matches
perfectly.
Central Engineering Design undertook
the rechroming – the bill for this alone coming to £4,136 and included just
about everything – bumpers included.
Tudor
wheels refurbished the wheels in stock silver – so much more fitting than the
brassy stainless modern items often fitted to these cars, pointing to the
careful and thoughtful restoration that has taken place to this car which now
sports new Avon Turbospeeds.
Included in the
file are a factory parts catalogue and service manual and it retains an original
Instruction book.
Carrying its original and
rather nice number 1104 WY, this is one of just 47 DBD MkIIIs fitted with triple
SUs and a twin exhaust (sounding very crisp) which developed a healthy
180bhp.
The level of detail is impressive and
we think you will struggle to find a better one.
